Picking Your Own Crochet Battles

Updated: 7 days ago

I find myself stopping from wanting to comment on the obvious missteps of another creator(s) on Facebook feed items. Through my own experiences, I can see the creator is steering people wrong or giving new terminology to something that exists. But the question is... is it really my place to correct another person?

Sit Back... Watch and Be Thrilled for Others

Years ago, I attended a function among designers who were upset about others copying their designs, changing something by a fraction and re-marketing it as something else to capture the interest. The tension was noticeable, and I spoke up about it. I'm glad I spoke up because a concept isn't the same as duplicating a pattern.

There's a time to stay in your lane and a time to expand outward. Briana K Designs is currently marketing and is really successful with a stitch concept of the Wheat Stitch. Incredible designs and ideas are coming from her. Astonishing creativity, and it really is all over Facebook. This is one of those times, sit back, get creative and think of something else instead of duplicating her effort. Let her have her moment; she deserves it. It's pretty exciting to say the least.

This is a designer and/or online creator you can trust.

Other Creators, You Have to Watch the Battles

With the evolution of the short-form concept, there comes a lot of quick advice that may or may not be right. There can always be several ways to execute an idea, but when a creator uses terminology or specifies that an idea is the wrong way and should be changed to a new way...

Is the new way truly new, or is the technique completely different?

In a recent short, the creator states that we are doing a stitch completely wrong and shows a new way to do it. But what they are doing isn't the same stitch at all. They are not referring to the 'new way' by its proper name, as they are telling consumers the new way is an entirely different stitch that's already in the crochet dictionary. This can lead new crocheters astray from conventional stitch learning.

I found myself thinking, "I need to correct this creator by commenting on their post," but then I realized it's not my community, it's not my place, and it's up to them to do more research or be more authentic. This is not a battle I need in my life to make the creator second-guess their content, but it's up to the followers of that community to help the creator out. The creator may be purposely pushing that content out for attention.

You Can Create Unnecessary Drama

I say to Yarnspirations often enough, I want to design, crochet and share my love of the craft. I don't want to spend my energy fighting with people on topics that really don't matter so much.

Once in a blue moon, a designer or creator may try to pick a fight to get attention from me. I see why they do it, so I can fight back to get all eyes on them.

Advice is Subjective

In my journey of advice, I learn as I go, and I don't pretend to know everything. But in some instances, I can give advice that will lead people astray or pick up advice I hadn't considered. It's what makes life interesting.

Crochet is meant to be a fun hobby and to use your creative side. On social media, people love to pick fights with others. It's whether you choose to engage or not.

I knew a guy who would intentionally state an opposite, negative point of view that he didn't believe in to watch people lose their minds and counter him. He had a sick pleasure in doing that intentionally for personal entertainment.

It's easy to fall into this cycle of being triggered by creators who do this sort of behaviour, BUT you have to realize when a creator is in the process of learning or just trying to trigger others. Authenticity matters the most, and figuring that out is a process for the general public.
