Are Crochet Socks Good or Bad? You Decide

Updated: Oct 22, 2025

There is an instinct for people who learn to knit to start making their own pair of socks. I was about 30 years into crochet before I attempted to make a pair. Are they hard to make? Not really. I fear one sock is not the same size as the other sock. That's legit... Right!?

The Crochet Family Socks Pattern for different sizes is above. When it comes to crochet, there are some pros and cons to consider.

The Yarn Dilemma

Many start with thicker yarn and whip up projects like hats, scarves, and maybe blankets. But crochet socks? They require a much thinner yarn. This means they take a while to make. Now, I’m not obsessed with speed, but those smaller stitches can be a bit time-consuming.

Problem with General Size Crochet Socks

You’ll notice patterns jump in size with different stitch counts. For example, the family size can be changed into five different sizes, but there are gaps in between. Feet don’t grow consistently, which makes this tricky. This pattern can be used for ages 2-4, 6-8, Ladies 5-6, Ladies 7-8, and Men's 10-11. Anything bigger than a man's eleven? Well, that requires a completely different pattern. Think about the thickness of the feet, length of the arches, and more changes.

Feel of The Socks

We pretty much always wear machine-knit socks. We’re used to that smooth texture under our feet. With crochet, the stitch texture isn’t quite the same. I’ve found stitches like single crochet, often used in crochet socks, can be uncomfortable. Those little bumps? You can feel them when you walk. Not exactly cozy, right?

Materials for Socks

You need to ensure you’re using sock yarn. Sock yarn has nylon added to the fibers, giving it durability against wear and tear. If you use just acrylic or other blends, your socks might rip apart pretty soon after you start wearing them.

Sock yarn tends to be pricier. But hey, I’m a big believer that you get what you pay for. Go cheap, and if it’s the wrong material, your time investment will have been for nothing.

You Decide

I wouldn’t say you shouldn’t make socks. You just have to ensure the yarn is right and count your stitches if something feels off. It’s the only way to achieve success. You’ll see the model above just casually wearing socks in a lounging situation. Depending on whether there’s wool in your socks, they can make for a cozy evening or keep you warmer in your boots.

Tips for Beginners

I wouldn’t recommend making crochet socks if you’re just starting out. Get used to your stitchwork and find your tension. Learn to crochet first and get comfortable before diving into sock-making.

The Joy of Creating

Creating your own socks can be a rewarding experience. Imagine slipping on a pair of cozy, handmade socks after a long day. There’s something special about wearing something you crafted with your own hands. Plus, you can customize the colors and patterns to match your style!

Conclusion

So, are crochet socks worth it? Absolutely! Just remember to choose the right yarn, keep an eye on your stitch count, and practice your skills. Soon enough, you’ll be rocking those handmade socks with pride.
