Learning to crochet requires some self-patience at the beginning. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Forcing A Child to Crochet

A woman brought her child to me during a free workshop. She was hard on her teenage daughter about her lack of ability to form stitches. Looked verbally abusive from my outside perspective.

So I asked the child, "What is it about crochet that you are struggling with?" The child said she was left-handed, and her mother was trying to force her to crochet right-handed.

The child was struggling to use the less dominant hand to do the work, and the mother was losing her patience with her.

I identified the issue immediately and thought, "What can I do to change this?" I pulled up my phone and showed her the left-handed tutorials, and she could see the stitches and motion from a left-handed position.

I told the mother to go shopping and leave me with the child. I told the girl to put her hook in her left hand and try again. Watching the video, I saw that the struggles that prompted her mother to bring her were gone. She was pretty upset, stating that her mother wants her to be like her and follow in the same path, including crocheting right-handed.

When the mother came back, she was astonished. Without being too judgmental, I told the mother, "She's left-handed. Let her be left-handed and enjoy the craft together."

The mother was destroying the learning curve for this child. Being selfish, if you ask me.

One of the reasons I cannot get certified as a teaching expert in crochet is that I believe you need to lean into people's strengths, adapt and find a way. We are not machines; we are humans with our expressions and ways of moving our bodies. Embrace it, don't fight it.
