I'm not a strong reader, and when I picked up crochet when I was fourteen years old, my first book was a crochet diagram with words below each. I followed the stitch key and learned new stitch techniques without using the words.

I'm a strong visual learner. I need to see where the stitches go to overcome my self-doubt about my ability to read the instructions properly. I have probably drawn thousands of these over the years by hand, but since learning how to design them on the computer, I have added hundreds to my library. If you understand this method, the language of your region is irrelevant if you know what the symbol means in your own language. Crochet diagrams open up the globe for more pattern usage and learning.
