Yarn Snobs Beware

Yes, in the yarn world, some of the crocheters and knitters are a bit snobby when it comes to their yarn but is it really snobbery?

A personal preference isn't necessary to be a yarn snob, but it's the attitude that is projected outward if you are going to judge another person's yarn choices. When learning to crochet, it's a bit of a shock when you think everyone will respect your own decisions.

If you have experienced this, leave me a rating and perhaps a comment sharing your experience below.

Yarn snob

I've seen this in my own experience, walking into an independent yarn shop and being looked at by the end of the shopkeeper's nose. Hell, she should be glad I am there, as crocheters tend to collect and also use a lot more yarn.

People are quick to judge, and I have been told that I have wasted my effort making something with value-based yarn instead of independent-level yarn.

In the crochet world, I'm a big believer that a person's project is their own choice. How they turn a thought into a real item is up to them. I don't live their life or know their budget or priorities.

I don't have children, so I can blow more on my yarn budget than someone with kids or people to care for. I have my partner and the furries running around the house. Mind you, having two great Pyrenees dogs is like feeding children, I think, cost-wise. I even get judged for what we feed our dogs, a raw-food diet, as they are 130 to 140 lbs of dog to take care of. Feed them well, and they will need less veterinary care, I believe.

Great Pyrenees Dog

Focus on the creativity, not how a person gets to that point. I have zero issues picking up yarn in the thrift store. If the yarn calls me, it's going in my cart.

People have personal choices about what brands they prefer. I prefer Red Heart, Bernat, and Caron yarns as my go-to brands. That's my choice, but it is not for everyone.

Be grateful there are choices.

Focus on what brings you joy. If you judge others by their yarn, knock it off or be part of the solution to give them yarn if it bothers you that much. Chances are, though, you won't give out the yarn, so be happy for them that they share your creative outlet.

Don't put everyone in the same category as those who love independent yarn. I know great people who prefer this level of yarn and are sweet when I pull out my value-based yarn. They understand that everyone has their own choices to make.

I will admit, though, that if I feel the shopkeeper is being too judgmental about my craft or my personal choices, it's easier to shop online or go to another location that appreciates the business. Ultimately, you can control your own narrative. You're the writer of your own story.

I don’t often go into fancy yarn shops. I like making things for the joy of doing it, and I don’t buy the most expensive yarns.

Well when I saw your post on FB about 'snobbery' I thought to myself, 'well does he mean yarn itself or yarn shops'. And there you mention the LYS! I use all sorts of yarns, I prefer how it Feels...to me. Some acrylics are kind of rough, wool can be too harsh for me & I love Unforgettable; and i know many don't! And yes, thrift shop yarn! My shop sells it over priced, but sometimes the don't know what they have. I got 2 bags of 3 cakes each for $1.99. They were high end $35 a hank yarns with the tags inside the cake!!! Lucky me!! But as for snobbery. I didn't know we still had a L…

I'm pretty much an acrylic girl - I am allergic to wool, and even blends make me itch and burn. And I mostly crochet/knit for charity, and they want acrylic only to eliminate the chance (in most cases) of allergies. I went to one LYS and asked what they carried in non-animal fibers due to allergies, and the owner was helpful! But the other customers were giving me side-eye. Came out with some nice CoBaSi for making me a pair of socks. But I mainly stay away from them simply because they don't carry what I need most.

I have every kind of yarn "in stock" in my stash. The only ones I have given away are colors I don't care for - browns are no go for me regardless of fiber and the funky fuzzy weird yarns that are almost impossible to have a quiet night of crochet with....they are better off in a childs project using glue! I do love love cashmere yarn and because the price is so very dear I save & save them with plenty of cedar planks until I just cannot resist making something with them - cowls are a fav - the softness on my neck is delightful. I love all the yarns and I get that snooty nose look …

oh my... don't get me started on the yarn snobbery LOL it is real for some. Some of us are like use what you can afford and enjoy working with. For me I can't tolerate standard wool it makes me itch even when blended like caron cakes though I wonder if the super soft merino's and such would be better. There's a local yarn shop, mind you I've never been but the opinion of others is she's a snob and looks down her nose if you don't use the high end wools from her shop. She doesn't like ones like me that use red heart and other budget friendly acrylic yarns. Apparently your not a real knitter unless you use…
