Does Mikey or The Crochet Crowd use AI to generate patterns?

The quick answer is no, but AI is used in some elements of the business itself. What you don't see is the hours of mental development it takes to generate a pattern. We do not use AI to generate patterns from scratch. See more about Mikey's development as a designer and his design process.
Give me a 5-Star Rating if you believe that this part of crochet world should remain a human mind and execution of steps. Feel free to leave a comment on my blog to share your thoughts on this element that appears to be popping up.

The Study of Series takes about 170 hours to develop one blanket pattern. Through testing and trials, the designs slowly appear on graph paper as handwritten crochet diagrams.
All of Mikey's start with a big pad of graph paper, and the sky is the limit on where it can go. Pencil in hand, trying a row, seeing if it looks good, then continuing to the next row or round. It's pretty pedestrian, but it's his design process.

Designs transform from handwritten notes into drawings in Adobe Illustrator. Over the years of learning, he's been able to bring the designs to magazine-quality.

Once the diagram(s) are drawn, the hard work is the writing of the pattern itself. Converting the diagram to word format. The real errors happen at this stage of design in not getting the repeat absolutely correct. The damn asterisk is usually a common problem that occurs regularly, where the repetition of the instructions begins.
Through informal mentorship with Yarnspirations, he patiently learned to write crochet patterns in a fluent manner, adhering to crochet standards. It took years of development, but we finally got a level that is publish-worthy.

While AI can assist in providing a helpful visual goal, it cannot, at this time, write in the standard crochet language needed for magazine or website-quality work. It can skip information and add unnecessary words or descriptions.
Some designers are turning to AI, and if you review their pattern sales on ETSY or RAVELRY, you may find that people have downloaded the pattern and realized it isn't actually written by a human and is full of mistakes. AI is not there for designing yet. Read the people's comments below the download before you purchase and/or download. You'll know instantly whether the design quality is there or if it's someone who doesn't know how to crochet and is trying to use AI to generate patterns without firsthand knowledge of what it takes to write one.
We use AI to clean up photos and add graphics, but we cannot use it for design. It's not, at this time, the solution for designing and providing the resources consumers expect. Essentially, this means our designs are AI-free for physical instructions, crochet diagrams, and schematics.
