A generic pattern for the crochet waffle stitch in the waves. It could be considered a zig-zag or even chevron stitch. Once you get the swing of this pattern, it's quite addictive.

This pattern takes a bit getting used to, but once you understand exactly what you are looking at, you can safely put down the pattern and put your hook to full steam ahead.
